Post-adoption service

Information about the Post-Adoption Service in Solihull.

Introduction

Adoption brings profound and permanent changes to all members of the family, and its influence and consequences will be part of your life-long commitment. The adoption service is now far more than a service for voluntarily relinquished babies, and with the children placed now older, and having gone through damaging early experiences, the need for post-adoption information, support and advice, is assuming ever greater significance. Against this background, Solihull recognises the need to offer a post-adoption service, which can respond to the needs of all those touched by adoption at any point in their lives.

What Services do we offer?

In Solihull, our local service aims to reach all those with an interest in adoption issues, so that they can meet, share experiences, share expertise and obtain support.

We offer :

Regular group meetings for adoptive parents and those approved for adoption, and awaiting placement. The meetings consist of a combination of guest speakers, discussions and workshops, on topics of interest to adopters.

Monthly group meetings run by adopters for adopters. The group meets to discuss topics of interest to adopters. Please see attached flyer "Let's Talk Adoption - It's good to talk" attached below.

A resource bank of experienced adopters, who are willing to act as mentors or support to other adopters or prospective adopters is available. Volunteers from the Resource Bank are able to offer telephone advice and support, particularly to adopters who are facing problems which they have already faced and overcome.

A post-adoption newsletter is circulated to keep people in touch, and to spread information about events, groups meetings, new ideas, training and support.

Experienced adopters are involved in training. They help at the adoption preparation courses for prospective adopters. They influence social work practice by contributing the consumer perspective to family placement training events.

There are Adoption Support Social Workers attached to Solihull Adoption Team who are available for informal consultation, advice and guidance. They will also undertake an assessment of need for additional adoption support should that be needed at any time.

Residents of Solihull are able to access to the services of "After Adoption - Midlands. This is based at Digbeth in Birmingham. They offer support, counselling and advice to individuals and families, who are involved in adoption.

How do I get involved?

Once your application to adopt has been accepted by the Agency, your name will be added to the post-adoption mailing list and you will automatically receive information and news. You will be able to access the service according to what is happening to your family at any given time.
