Public Transport Improvement Scheme Around the NEC and Airport
A £11m scheme to improve the road system around Birmingham International Station, Birmingham Airport and The NEC has now been completed.
The ANITA scheme (Airport and NEC Integrated Transport Access Scheme) was funded by the Department for Transport.
Benefits include better bus services, reduced journey times and improved facilities for passengers.
The scheme improves transport links between the north and south of the borough, opening up opportunities for people, particularly those living in the north of the borough to use public transport to travel to different parts of the borough for employment. This means that people can find jobs in areas where normally they wouldn’t be able to travel to.
There is a new interchange at Birmingham International station, improving the links between trains and buses; new bus shelters, traffic information signs along the scheme’s route, which give information about the surrounding roads and bus services, ensuring drivers get the most up to date information about their journeys.
The traffic management signs will also help improve traffic flow in the area, especially around the times when there are large events at the NEC.
People will also be able to plan their journeys more easily, thanks to new passenger signs which give detailed information about the public transport services, for example, when the next bus is due to arrive.
And for those who prefer to walk or cycle, the scheme provides new and improved footpaths and cycle paths.
