Information about discount to Council Tax - Disabled Relief

You may be able to claim a discount if you (or someone who lives with you) are disabled and your home has one or more of the following features, to meet the needs of the disabled person:

• A room (other than a bathroom, kitchen or toilet) used mainly by the disabled person.
• An additional bathroom or kitchen for the use of the disabled person.
• Extra space inside to allow the use of a wheelchair.

How we consider the discount

We provide the discount if the lack of these extra features would cause the disabled person's health to suffer, disability to become more severe or cause difficulty to live in the home.

To qualify for a reduction, the extra room does not need to be specially built, it can be an existing room used specifically for the person with the disability.

We can give you a discount

If you are on Council Tax band A

If your home is in band A (the lowest Council Tax band) your bill will be reduced by 1/9 of the charge for band D.

For example:

If you are on any other Band

Your bill will be reduced to that of a property in the valuation band below yours. For example, if your home is in band D, your bill will be reduced so that it is the same as a band C.

This will not affect the value of your home or its banding on the valuation list. Your bill will still show your home is in band D.
