Business rates

Business Rates, also called non-domestic rates, are charged on properties not used for domestic purposes such as shops, factories, hotels and offices.

Properties used for domestic and business purposes (composite properties) will be valued for council tax on the domestic part of the property, and for business rates on the business part of the property. An example of this type of property would commonly be found in a public house.

We collect business rates from over 4,000 business properties in our borough. The money goes into a central government pool which is redistributed to all councils across the country based on their population.

How are Business Rates calculated?

The charges for Business Rates are calculated by multiplying the rateable value of an individual property by the national non-domestic multiplier. The result of this calculation is the amount of rates payable for the year.

How can I make an enquiry on my account or pay a Business Rates Bill?

Accounts enquiries can be made through the Business Rates Team.

Payment of Business Rates should be made in line with the instalments shown on your bill. We receive payment by Direct Debit, Bacs, Post, in person or via Debit/Credit Card on-line or over the telephone.
