CCTV
The introduction of Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) has been one of the best weapons against crime. It has proved effective in both cutting and detecting crime, helping people feel safer when they're out and about. The Solihull CCTV system comprises over 80 cameras around the Borough.
What is CCTV used for?
The Home Office states CCTV surveillance is particularly valuable when used as part of a wider crime reduction strategy, thus strengthening partnership with the local police.
Pictures from the cameras are continuously monitored at our Communications Centre. The Police are informed of suspicious incidents as they arise and can be directed to the exact location by CCTV operators.
Types of offences that can lead to arrests include:
- Shoplifting.
- Pick-pocketing.
- Possession of drugs.
- Assault.
- Unauthorised taking of motor vehicles.
- Public order offences.
Truancy
We make use of the CCTV cameras installed in town centres to detect young people that should be in school. If young people are seen by the CCTV system and are thought to be truanting from school this information will be passed to the Education Welfare Service and the Police to investigate further. Young people identified as truanting from school will be returned to school.
In addition to missing out on education, young people truanting from school and spending their time wandering the streets, shopping centres and other public areas are at risk of becoming involved in crime either as victims or as offenders.
Littering
CCTV cameras are also being used to catch flytippers in the act and those who are caught will be prosecuted. Those who refuse to pay their fines will end up in court.
The CCTV system is overseen by us but we link to many organisations across the Borough in managing the system. We are currently developing a new strategy for the Partnerships we have in place. This strategy is likely to recommend that we involve more organisations and bodies in the running of the cameras, and make changes to upgrade the camera system as well as the service we are able to provide.
