Respite Care - Day Respite
Day respite can be provided to offer short periods of respite in a range of different ways either in the home; or in day centres for older people. It may also be possible to access services provided by the private and voluntary sector.
The Carers' Support Scheme
The Carers’ Support Scheme is a free service funded by Social Services to support the carers of older people, who have dementia or confusion, by providing a regular three hour break at least once a week by a trained Support Worker in the person’s own home. The scheme is not registered to provide personal care.
Criteria for the service:
- the client must reside in Solihull and be over 50 years of age,
- the client must suffer from confusion or dementia, and;
- the carer must take responsibility for "handling the client" over to the Support Worker and be there at the end to have them "handed back".

Crossroads - Caring for Carers
This services offers support to relieve stress in families responsible for the care of a disabled person (any age) by allowing the carer time to have a break from caring, to go shopping, visit friends or attend social functions.
It provides trained care support workers to assist carers of disabled people by providing care and performing tasks the carer would normally carry out.
How do we decide if you qualify for this service?
To obtain Crossroads Care you need to be a carer with responsibility for an ill or disabled person (of any age) who cannot be left alone. The Crossroads Coordinator visits each applicant and discusses the situation with her/him in complete confidence. As a registered Charity, we rely on regular donations from our clients.
