Young Carers Support Services

We support young people aged 9-18 who look after someone in their family who has an illness, disability, mental health or substance misuse problem. Young carers take on practical and/or emotional caring responsibilities that would normally be expected of an adult.

What do they do?

The same as an adult carer. As well as schooling, young carers may have to undertake:

  • Personal, intimate and medical care
  • Domestic chores and shopping
  • Care of other children in the family
  • Budgeting and managing money
  • Providing emotional support

What are the effects of caring?

If nobody is aware that a young person is caring, the effects and responsibilities can go largely unrecognised. This can lead to:

  • Disrupted and missed schooling
  • Missed childhood experiences
  • Pressure of responsibility
  • Fatigue, tiredness
  • Loneliness and isolation
  • Lack of time to relax and have fun

How can we help you?

Getting your voice heard

If you feel like adults are not listening to you in school, or in meetings… we can help you with what you want to say.

One to one support

We can offer help and support with any problems that you might have. If you are having problems at home or school or just want someone to talk to, you can spend time with someone who understands your situation and will listen to you.

Information and advice

If you need to know about anything, we can try and help you find the answers that you are looking for.

Activities and Days Out

Meet with other young carers on trips out, especially during the holiday times. Get involved in local activities or groups that you enjoy.

Signposting

We can point you in the right direction of other people that might be able to help.

Carers Card

You will get a card to write down important peoples names and phone numbers to contact in an emergency and you can also use it to go to places free or cheap.

School and homework

If you have problems with bullying, worries at school or need help with homework, let us know.

What to do next – Referrals

If you think that you might be a young carer, or know someone that may be caring for someone in their family, give us a call on 0121 788 1143. Informal enquiries are welcome from young people, families, voluntary and statutory agencies.

Referrals can be made directly only with permission from the young person. Young people can also refer themselves.

Please take a look at our leaflet and referral criteria for further information, or contact us on the details below.
