Solihull Civic Honours 2012
Do you know someone who has a made a real difference in Solihull and deserves recognition for it? Then why not nominate them for a Civic Honour? Nominations are now open for this year’s Civic Honours and they are our way of recognising the local unsung heroes who go above and beyond to make the borough a better place.
The Awards
Perhaps you know someone who has been helping out at a community club for years, or someone who has set up a local activity group. Whoever the person, whatever the good work – let us know.
We are looking for people for the following categories:
- The Arts: An individual who has made a significant contribution to raising the profile of the arts in the borough – whether it be visual art, theatre, music, photography or dance.
- Sport: A person who has worked tirelessly behind the scenes at a local sports club or group.
- Community Involvement: People who have made a real difference in their community, for example fundraising for a local charity, running a community group or organising events.
- Making a Difference for Young People: Someone who has given up their time to make a difference to young people in the borough.
- Young Hero: Someone special aged 25 or under who has already made a real difference to their community.
- The Mayor’s Award: Someone who has made an outstanding contribution to the lives of the people of the borough or who have promoted the borough regionally, nationally or internationally.
How do you nominate?
Nominations can be received from any member of the community. To nominate someone, either use the online nomination form or download the nomination form on the right hand side of this page.

The deadline for nominations is Saturday 21 July 2012.
What happens next?
All nominations will be reviewed by a panel of judges.
Successful nominees will be informed by the end of September and the judging panel’s decision is final. Normally there will be one award for each category, but the panel reserves the right to award more than one if they think it is necessary.

Arts Awards
- Jennifer Wardman for over 30 years work in Solihull community arts.
- Derek Lardner for his long history of inspiring young people in drama and his active involvement both front and backstage in many local drama productions.
Community Invovlement Awards
- Jan Kirton for her commitment for local services to the blind.
- Malcolm and Ann Turner - or “Mr and Mrs Shirley” as some know them for their dedication to the residents of Shirley and its Town Centre, including fund raising for the Christmas lights.
- Patricia Hill for her devotion to providing advice, guidance and support to hundreds of people through the Solihull Cancer Support Group.
- Betty Bancroft, a mainstay in a range of community groups focusing on improving Olton and its community spirit.
Making a Difference for Young People Awards
- May Sutton for her work with the Shirley & District Sea Cadets over the last 40 years.
Sport Awards
- John Walker for his work over the last 30 years in establishing sport for all, being instrumental in introducing wheelchair athletics and coaching countless local athletes.
The Mayor’s Award
- Derek Tilford for his work to improve the lives of retired servicemen.
