Decision making - the Cabinet

The Cabinet system operates in a similar way to the Government's with each member of the Cabinet having specific responsibilities and decision making powers in the same way as ministers do.

At the Annual Council meeting Councillor Ken Meeson was elected Leader of the Council for the period from 2011 - 2015 and he announced the Members of his Cabinet and their portfolios.

The Leader of the Council has delegated specific responsibilities to each member of the Cabinet. The allocation of functions to each cabinet member can be downloaded from this page.

The Cabinet meet collectively in public on a monthly basis, to take the most important decisions relating to financial expenditure/savings and those with significant impact on local communities. Individual Cabinet members also hold meetings on average once a month (and private meetings where appropriate) when they can make decisions with regards to their specific portfolio.

The Leader of the Council has to publish a forward plan every month which details each of the major decisions expected to be taken over a four month period.
