Safer Solihull  Partnership Members

West Midlands Police and Solihull Care Trust

The membership of the Safer Solihull includes a range of organisations, which operate in the Borough of Solihull.

The Crime and Disorder Act 1998 and the Police Reform Act 2002 gave local authorities, police authorities and fire services "Responsible Authority Status" to work together and promote community safety in their everyday work. Care Trusts received this status from April 2004.

In addition to theses organisations there are a number of others, which are members of Safer Solihull and help to make Solihull a safer place to live and work. All have a key interest in the reduction of crime and disorder and/or how drug and alcohol issues are addressed.

The Safer Solihull consists of representatives from the organisations listed below:

  • Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council is the local authority serving the Solihull area. The Chief Executive' Directorate, the Public Health Directorate, the Adult Social Services Directorate, the Education and Children's Services Directorate, the Community Services Directorate are all represented on the CDRP/DAT.

  • West Midlands Police Authority is a body established by law and comprises of local people, whose main responsibility is to make sure that the West Midlands has the best possible police service.

  • Solihull Care Trust is the organisation responsible for making sure that healthcare services are available for the people of Solihull.

  • West Midlands Police are responsible for crime prevention and crime detection in the Metropolitan Borough of Solihull. The force is divided into 21 autonomous units known as Operational Command Units (OCU's), each controlled by a Chief Superintendent answerable to the Chief Constable.

  • Solihull Youth Offending Team is a multi-agency organisation that aims to reduce offending by children and young people aged 10 - 17 and to have a preventive role in reducing the risk of offending by all young people.

  • National Probation Service works with people who have committed different types of offences such as burglary, violence, car crime and sex offences and provides probation supervision, offender behaviour programmes and specialist support services which can stop people committing further offences.

  • Crown Prosecution Service is an independent prosecution service who prosecutes on behalf of the public. They advise the police as to the evidence they require to charge and prosecute defendants

  • The Courts Service is in charge of the Magistrates Courts and Crown Courts. The Magistrates Courts finalise 95% of criminal cases. The other 5% (the most serious cases) are finalised in the Crown Courts.

  • Connexions gives young people information, advice, guidance and practical help to prepare for adult and working life and also offers counselling help for young people with personal difficulties and those with special needs or circumstances.

  • West Midlands Fire Service is the fire service covering Solihull.

  • Chamber of Commerce: Solihull Chamber is the leading business support organisation in Solihull. The Chamber offers advice, information, lobbying and events for the local business community.

  • Aquarius provides a wide range of alcohol services. In Solihull these include a core service, probation service offender work and primary care/GP medical centre based services. The Aquarius website describes available services in detail.

  • Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council is represented by Ted Richards Leader of the Council and Diana Holl-Allen who is member with responsibility for Community Safety.
  • Solihull Community Housing (SCH) has a specialist Tenancy Relations Team that deals with anti social behaviour and is committed to ensuring that tenants observe their conditions of tenancy. In addition to that, SCH is about to launch a major investment in CCTV and estate security to make sure that crime hot spots are more effectively monitored.

  • Whitefriars Housing Group is a registered Social Landlord and member of In-Partnership Consortium which is working in partnership with Solihull Council to regenerate North Solihull.

  • Victim Support Victim Support is a registered charity that helps to assist victims of crime on an emotional and practical basis. They also operate as an information service linking individuals with other more specialised agencies. They have trained volunteers that will either visit a victims home see or them within their offices.
