Councillors - general information.

General information on local councillors, including who they are and what they do.

As a result of the Local Government Act 2000, the role of councillors has changed with the introduction of an executive/scrutiny system. This system allows decisions to be carefully examined and considered by Councillors.

What do Councillors do?

Your Councillor has a very important role in helping shape future services for the community and are essential in deciding public interest on Council issues.

Each ward has three Councillors, who each stand for four years. A local election is held in three out of the four year period - each time one Councillor's seat will be up for election in each ward.

All members (Councillors) meet together as the Council to decide Council policies, decisions and budgets. These meetings are normally open to the public. The Council appoints a leader, who then appoints a Cabinet. The Council also appoints Overview and Scrutiny Boards to monitor decisions made by the Council.

How they can help you?

They can help if you are dissatisfied with a Council service by giving advice, directing you to someone who can help, or progress the case on your behalf. Councillors often provide advice surgeries where you can meet with them and discuss problems.

As community leaders they may put forward proposals to improve their ward, which may include bringing together different community groups to develop a case for change.
