Mayor of Solihull

Norman Davies

Norman was born and bred in Acocks Green of Welsh parents.  His grandfather founded the Birmingham Welsh Society and he proudly boasts that Lloyd George, its first president, really knew his father!  He was brought up in the traditions of the Baptist Church and was a deacon and organist at his local church for many years.  He was educated at King Edwards Camp Hill Grammar School for Boys and trained to be a science teacher at St Peter’s College in Saltley.  During his teaching career he taught at a number of Birmingham secondary schools becoming a deputy Headteacher before moving across to the Adult Education sector as Principal of the Bournville Institute.  A further career change saw him move into local government, becoming Assistant Director in Birmingham’s Leisure Department with responsibilities that included major events, sport and the arts.

On his retirement he became involved in local politics and was elected to Solihull Council in 1996 as a Liberal Democrat representing Olton Ward, a position he has retained to this day.  While a member of the Council he has been particularly involved in Education and Leisure and in recent years has been Leader of the Opposition.  He is Chair of Governors of Lanchester School and holds regional responsibilities for Human Resources and Improvement.

He has a particular interest in outdoor activities and is chair of  Ackers Adventure in Small Heath which provides skiing, climbing, canoeing, archery and abseiling opportunities for young people from all over the West Midlands.

During his lifetime he has been a scout, a youth leader, a Rotarian, a SCUBA diver and a caravanner. His other interests include gardening, walking, photography and playing the piano and classical organ.

Mayoress of Solihull

Brenda Davies

Brenda was born and brought up in Hall Green and attended local schools. On leaving school she became a local government officer working in Birmingham’s Education Department. She met Norman at the church they both attended and they were married in 1965. They have two sons and three grandchildren.

Returning to work Brenda found herself again in the Education Department before moving out to Ninestiles School in Acocks Green as a school secretary, a position she held for 21 years.  Now in retirement Brenda keeps herself busy with her grandchildren, her garden and her dog, Buddug (pronounced Bithig). She also tries to look after Norman on those brief moments when their paths cross!  She enjoys walking and playing table tennis, a sport at which she always beats her husband.

Robert Hotchkiss - Mayor's Sea Scout 2009/2010

Rob was born in Solihull and lives with his family in Knowle. At the age of ten Rob joined the sea scouts. Four years later, Rob now serves as a Watch Leader and is responsible for the Starboard Watch, and the forty Sea Scouts within it.

Rob attends Arden school and is currently in year 11. Rob is a keen sportsman, he plays rugby for both school and Bees RFC and runs cross country. Last year he represented the West Midlands cross-country team in a national race. Rob is a form and house captain at school.

Joining the sea scouts has given Rob many opportunities that may not have been available otherwise. Rob has been on five summer camps including ones to HMS Bristol; a decommissioned war vessel.

Rob is honoured to be the Mayor of Solihull's Sea Scout and looks forward to a busy year assisting the Mayor and representing Solihull.
