Community Governance Reviews

A community governance review enables us to review and put in place or make changes to community governance systems and structures – for example by creating, merging, abolishing or changing parish or town councils in the review area.

The the aim of a review is to bring about improved community engagement, more cohesive communities, better local democracy and result in more effective and convenient delivery of local services.

We are currently conducting a Community Governance Review of the parishes of Balsall and Berkswell.  An important part of the review is to give residents, businesses and interested organisations an opportunity to submit their views on how they want their neighbourhoods to be represented.

Who is carrying out the review?

Solihull MBC is responsible for undertaking any community governance review within the boundaries of the Solihull Borough. The Council is responsible for agreeing the terms of reference for the review and agreeing any draft or final recommendations.

The review does not automatically mean there will be changes but it will see if there is a case for change.  Solihull Council is not seeking a particular solution at this stage.  It wishes to see what your views are and what solutions you feel are right.

Terms of Reference for the review

The terms of reference set out how the review will be carried out. The full document can be downloaded by clicking the link to the right of this page.

This review covers all aspects relating to boundaries and electoral arrangements of the Balsall and Berkswell Parishes. The ultimate aim of the review is to secure effective and convenient local government, which represents the identities and interests of local communities.

We've also created a short summary that sets out what the review is, who can have their say, and other useful information. You can view this document here.

What happens Next?

Over 400 responses to the initial consultation were received and considered by the Community Governance Review Steering Group.  The Steering Group has recommended some Draft Proposals which will be considered by the Governance Committee on 19th April.

If the Governance Committee accepts the recommended draft proposals these will then be published for a further 3 month period of consultation (until 31st July 2012) before the Council produces any final proposals.

How you can have your say

We would like to hear your views on the draft proposals once they have been published after the Governance Committee has met. as well as any other general comments you may have.  During the three months consultation period thee will be public meetings in the areas likely to be affected by the review.  The details will be published on this page as soon as dates are set.

Any enquires or correspondence regarding the review should be directed to:
