Donate your unwanted mobile phone and accessories

Over 15 million mobile phones are replaced every year. There are an estimated 90 million sitting in drawers and toy boxes across the country. Residents can now pick up or request a free post envelope for recycling their mobile phone, charger, instruction manual and any accessories they may have.

The scheme is operated by CLIC Sargent a charity caring for Cancer and Leukaemia in Childhood. Whether the phone is still usable or totally unusable £3 is donated every time.

150 phones will fund a CLIC Sargent family support worker for a week, 650 phones will fund a CLIC Sargent play specialist for a month and 3,500 phones will fund 10 families to have a holiday at Malcolm Sargent House.

Envelopes for recycling your old mobile phone can be requested by telephoning 0121 704 8000 or can be collected from your Local LibraryConnect Walk-In Centres or Housing Office or from the Mobile Library and Bickenhill Household Waste Recycling Centre.

Recycle your old Jewellery

Solihull Youth Offending Team is asking for donations of unwanted costume jewellery. It doesn't matter if it's broken or you only have one earring, as it will be used to create new pieces of jewellery by the young offenders the team work with. The jewellery will be sold to raise money for charity.

You can either take your jewellery to the Box Office at the Solihull Arts Complex, or send it direct Dennis Rowe Youth Offending Team at Keepers Lodge, Solihull.

If you are donating semi-precious stones or jewellery such as amber, jade or silver, please label these to help the young people cost their items. Please do not give any precious stones or jewellery such as sapphires, diamonds or gold.

A to Z of Recycling

Solihull Council have produced an A to Z of Recycling booklet to help you recycle. This A-Z provides details of how you can dispose of unwanted items without just throwing them in the bin. Most items in a household bin can be recycled or reused.

If you would like a copy of this booklet for reference please contact us on 0121 704 8000 of email wasteandrecycling@solihull.gov.uk

Waste to Energy

Solihull has met the targets set for recovery of energy from waste. The collected household waste is disposed of via a Waste to Energy plant in Coventry, that Solihull Council part own.

Energy and heat produced is used to heat the plant and neighbouring factories, steam is used to produce electricity, which is sold back to the National Grid. For information on the Coventry and Solihull Waste to Energy plan see http://www.cswdc.co.uk/
