Environmental Crime

The Council plays an active role in the Cleaner Safer Greener agenda

Solihull Council has a wide remit in relation to environmental crime, and leads the response locally to issues such as litter, fly tipping, fly posting, graffiti, dog fouling and smokefree.  The Council works in partnership with many other organisations in the fight against environmental crime including West Midlands Police, Solihull Community Housing, the Environment Agency, Her Majesty's Courts Service, and the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency.

Solihull Council is a founding member of the West Midlands Environmental Crime Group, where environmental health officers from the local authorities within the region share policies, best practice and information about prolific offenders that operate across boundaries.

The Council's environmental health officers aim to reduce environmental crime using a variety of methods.  Work within schools, high profile media campaigns and presentations seek to educate the public about environmental crime and raise the profile of the issue in general.  Covert static and mobile surveillance equipment is used to catch environmental criminals in the act, and officers undertake high visibility foot patrols in problematic areas to prevent environmental crime and to issue fixed penalty notices where offences take place.  Investigations lead to numerous prosecutions each year.  Environmental health officers also coordinate a number of proactive exercises and operations throughout Solihull to prevent environmental crime.
