Fairtrade in Solihull
Solihull is a proud supporter of Fairtrade and was awarded Fairtrade Borough status in September 2010. The application was made by Solihull Fairtrade, the local steering group.
What is Fairtrade?
"Fair trade" helps to ensure disadvantaged farmers and workers in developing countries are treated fairly and get a better deal for their products. This is often certified through the Fairtrade Foundation (note Fairtrade - all one word, capital F). The Fairtrade Foundation awarded us the Fairtrade Borough mark, and certify products as diverse as bananas to footballs, cotton to gold!
'fair trade', or 'fairly traded', or 'ethically traded' are description used by organisations that dont choose to apply through the Fairtrade Foundation. In some cases their product is not suitable, or they have their own commitments (such as Hotel Chocolat and Punjana Tea).
Other certification schemes are available. The Rainforest Alliance is similar to Fairtrade and they work to conserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable livelihoods by transforming land-use practices, business practices and consumer behaviour.
