Types of Governors and How to Apply
Information about what governors do and how to become one.
Types of Governors
The different categories of governor are:
Parent Governor
Parents, including carers, of registered pupils at a school are eligible to stand for election as Parent Governors.Community Governor
Community Governors are chosen and appointed by the governing body. Pupils, Council staff and school staff cannot be Community Governors.Staff Governor
Teaching and support staff paid to work at the school are eligible for election as a staff governor.LA Governor
LA Governors are appointed by the Local Authority. LA Governors cannot be members of the school staff.Foundation Governor
In Foundation, Voluntary Controlled or Voluntary Aided schools, Foundation Governors are appointed to represent the interest of the Church authority, voluntary trust or other organisation.Sponsor Governors
Sponsor Governors are appointed by the governing body at its own discretion.Associate Members
Associate Members are appointed by the governing body and can include pupils, staff and others with specific expertise to offer. They can serve on committees and attend full governing body meetings. Associate Members are not governors and not recorded on the Instrument of Government.Procedure for becoming an LA Governor
Applications to become an LA Governor are made via Governor Services. All other applications should be made direct to the school.
| Step 1: | Send a completed and signed LA School Governor Application Form to Governor Services. |
| Step 2: | Governor Services arrange your allocation to a school. |
| Step 3: | Governor Services send you CRB form for completion. |
| Step 4: | Once CRB clearance received Governor Services will obtain Local Authority agreement to your appointment. |
| Step 5: | Governor Services will write to confirm your appointment. |
