Benefits and bills

If you are a long term resident in hospital you should notify the Department for Work and Pensions and our Revenues & Benefits office.

This is important as your benefit entitlement may change as a result of being in hospital (especially if you are in hospital for over 52 weeks).

If you were not claiming any benefits, before going into hospital, you may be entitled to claim now.

Hospital patients will qualify for a Council Tax discount if the hospital has become their only or main residence (short term residence in hospital will not qualify an individual for a discount).

Also qualifying for this discount will be those who are residents of a nursing home or residential care home for whom the home has become their only or main residence.

When coming out of hospital

When you come out of hospital you should notify us and the Department for Work and Pensions again.

Your benefits may need to be reassessed when you return home. You may be entitled to other benefits e.g. if you have become disabled as a result of your illness.
