Str8 Up - Information for professionals

What do we do?

We provide services for children and young people who are having difficulty with their own drug, alcohol or solvent use. We also provide services for children affected by their parental substance use. The services we offer include advice, information and support, prescribing, relapse prevention, harm reduction, counselling and links into other services. We also provide group work for children affected by their parental substance use, this includes diversionary activities and targeted interventions.

Who is eligible?

Children and young people must be under the age of 18 years old. They must live in the borough of Solihull OR attend a Solihull school.

Is parental consent required?

Parental consent is not always necessary, but we do prefer that you gain parental consent where possible. If the child is under 12 years old we will need parental consent, or consent from someone who holds Parental Responsibility. Please contact us if you are unsure.

What is the referral process?

As a referring professional we ask that you use the Drug Use Screening Tool (DUST). We cannot accept a referral without this being completed unless there are exceptional circumstances. The DUST can be completed in conjunction with the young person (and family if appropriate) it can also be completed separately. The young person MUST consent to the referral. If a family or young person wishes to self refer, please encourage them to telephone us directly 0 they do not need to use a DUST. We aim to offer an appointment for assessment upon receipt of referral. A comprehensive assessment is carried out before helping the young person put a care plan together identifying the support we will be offering them.

DUST is available on paper.  Telephone our office to obtain a DUST pack which includes some basic literature and information as well as the DUST form.

I know a young person who would benefit from your service but they don't acknowledge this. Can I still make a referral?

We can only accept the referral if they have given their consent. We can offer you advice and guidance as to how to engage them into our service and advise you on materials you could use to help them identify their drug/alcohol problems.

How confidential is your service?

We offer a confidential service subject to our policy and according to Solihull's Local Safeguarding Children's Board guidelines. Confidentiality is explained to both the young person and their family before the assessment is carried out.
