The Heart of Shirley
Shirley town centre is one of the borough's main towns, and we want to see it thriving - a place where people can live, shop, work and enjoy their leisure time.
Consultation
In 1997 we asked the people of Shirley what they would like to see in their town centre. You told us that a shopping square with a new food store and more nationally known shops could improve the centre; that the majority were aware of the park but didn't use it.
Taking these views into account, we appointed developers Shirley Advance to produce a scheme to put the heart back into Shirley.
They also consulted with you, and have developed plans which are based around an anchor superstore - Asda, along with high street shops, cafes, restaurants, and residential development. There will also be improvements to the park, making it more accessible for everyone. The plans also include traffic improvements.
Councillors have granted planning permission for the scheme and the Secretary of State has decided not to intervene.
The next steps
We are currently promoting a compulsory purchase order to acquire the outstanding land needed for the scheme, and a public inquiry will start on 8 May 2008 to consider objections made to the order.
In the meantime, Councillors have agreed that 1.07 hectares of open space land needed for the development will be appropriated to planning purposes when we are in a position to proceed with the scheme.
The three parcels of land proposed for appropriation are:
- 0.45 hectares or thereabouts to the rear of 47-63 (odd numbers) Haslucks Green Road
- two parcels of parkland - 0.62 hectares or thereabouts, one of which is to side and rear of 67 Haslucks Green Road;
- the other to the rear of Saracens Head pub and the British Legion on Stratford Road.
