Affordable Housing - Rented Homes from Housing Associations

Information about properties that become available through Housing Associations and how to apply

When does an affordable rented property provided by Housing Associations become available in Solihull?

Solihull Council and Housing Associations provide affordable rented homes when existing tenants choose to move on, thereby making the property available for re-letting. Housing associations also build new homes for rent as opportunities arise.

How do I qualify & apply?

You can apply directly to Housing Associations using the information below. To join the Council's Housing Register contact the Housing Options Team at Solihull Community Housing.  You can contact Solihull Community Housing by emailing: info@solihullcommunityhousing.org.uk or by telephoning 0121 717 1515

Waterloo, Bromford and Sanctuary are a part of the Solihull Home Options scheme. This means that they share the same allocation policy and waiting list as the Council and advertise available properties through the Solihull Home Options scheme. Therefore if you are on the Council's Housing Register you do not need to register separately with these Housing Associations.

Are Housing Association tenancies the same as Solihull Council tenancies?

As a council tenant you have a secure tenancy agreement. New Housing Association tenants have an 'assured tenancy', which still provides long term security of tenure. This means that you will not have to leave your home unless you want to, or if the Association has good reason for taking the property back that can be proven to a court. An important difference is that 'assured tenants' will not be eligible for the Right to Buy.

How are rents calculated and reviewed?

The rent you will pay on your house will be set by the Housing Association. Being non-profit making organisations, a Housing Association's purpose is that of providing accommodation within the reach of low paid people. Some properties may include service charges (typically for heating in communal areas of flat accommodation). It is important that you find these things out before you sign your tenancy agreement.
