Walk to School Week – Sound Detectives
From nscott on 14 May 2008
Rush hour traffic could be a lot quieter next week as more than 13,000 primary school children across Solihull are set to walk to school as part of the national Walk to School Week.
As many as 43 borough schools are taking part in the week long campaign where youngsters are also being encouraged to become ‘Sound Detectives’ and discover the many different sounds they can hear when walking which they would otherwise miss if travelling to school in the car.
Recent Government statistics suggest that one in three Year 6 pupils are overweight or obese and worryingly 41% of pupils are still driven to school in cars, which makes the Walk to School campaign even more important.
Walking offers children and parents many benefits – it’s healthy, it’s active, it’s free and it’s a great way to equip children with the skills they need to make more independent journeys as they grow older.
