Constable sketch goes under the hammer
From Press Office on 05 September 2008
The sale of a John Constable sketch of Malvern Hall owned by Solihull Council is set to go under the hammer later this month as a ‘star lot’ at a top London auctioneers.
Bonhams have been instructed to sell the sketch of the Hall, which is close to the town centre and now home to St Martin’s School. The Hall’s then owner, Henry Greswolde, commissioned the artist to paint views of it during the early 1800s - one of which now hangs in Tate Britain.
The sketch will be sold at a sale of 18th and 19th Century Watercolours and Drawings which will take place at the Knightsbridge auctioneers on September 23 and is estimated to fetch between £15,000 and £20,000.
Notes to Editor
The sale is part of £4 million of efficiency savings identified following the Council’s lowest Government settlement for the next three years per head of metropolitan councils.
