Gold blooms for Solihull
From Cabinet Member for Quality of Life and Neighbourhoods, Cllr Mrs Diana Holl-Allen on 22 September 2008
Solihull Council is celebrating success in the 2008 regional Heart of England in Bloom competition.
The borough has been presented with a Gold award in the City Category, which was collected by the Mayor of Solihull, Councillor David Bell.
The competition judges the way that the Council looks after the local environment such as taking care of parks, pavements and roads, keeping streets clean and its waste and recycling services. It also looks at how the community and local business get involved with looking after their local area.
This year’s competition saw a tremendous amount of support from residents and groups who contributed by looking after small pockets of land as well as welcoming the judges on judging day to see exactly what they have achieved over the year; including Widney Manor Station Soroptomists volunteers, Hockley Heath Gardening Club, St Alphege Church, Shakespeare Drive Allotment Association and Tidbury Green School to name but a few.
Judges from Heart of England in Bloom were given a guided tour of the borough to show them the results of everyone’s hard work. On Solihull’s entry the judges commented: “The Solihull judging tour started at the excellent Castle Bromwich Hall Gardens and this standard was maintained through a busy schedule. There were well maintained and colourful bedding displays in all corners of the district and at Malvern Park there was a good traditional carpet bed with the Local Roots theme. Well done to everyone involved in the tour."
Cabinet Member for Quality of Life and Neighbourhoods, Councillor Mrs Diana Holl-Allen said: “This is a fantastic result which is testament to all the hard work that goes into keeping our borough clean and green. Well done to everyone involved.”
Solihull was also the regional entry in the National Britain in Bloom competition. The results will be announced on Wednesday 24 September.
