Don’t bottle it! New glass collection starts next week

From Press Office on 22 September 2008

Solihull Council’s new glass recycling collection service starts for residents next week.

Black recycling boxes have been delivered to 78,000 homes for people to collect their glass bottles and jars. The boxes will be collected every fortnight from 29 September.

When the new glass collection starts, the paper collection will also change to every fortnight which means that paper will be collected one week, glass the next and so on. Carrying out the collections in this way is better for the environment and offers good value for money, as it means that the Council does not have to send out extra trucks.

What can you put in your glass recycling box?

Yes please:     All glass bottles and jars – please rinse them out and remove all lids and corks

No thank you:  Glass ovenware or dishes (these are made of different glass which needs a higher temperature to melt)
Glass vases – some glass vases contain lead which means they can’t be recycled. Why not  take your old vases to a charity shop instead?
Broken glass – this is dangerous for you and our contractors who carry out the collections

Collected glass can be crushed, melted and turned back into bottles and jars, over and over again. Recycled glass can also be used to help resurface roads and turned into sand for places such as golf bunkers.

The new glass collection services marks the start of the transformation of waste and recycling services in Solihull – with new collections planned for next year for plastic bottles, tins and cardboard as well as the introduction of black wheelie bins for rubbish that can’t be recycled.

The Council is planning for people living in flats, maisonettes and apartment blocks to take part in the collection scheme next year.
