People of all ages are invited to older people’s celebration

From Press Office on 22 September 2008

Solihull Community Housing (SCH) is celebrating the contribution older residents make to the borough with a day of fun, activities and entertainment on UK Older People’s Day.

On Wednesday 1 October 2008 residents from all over the borough are invited to The Onwards Club, Helmswood Drive, Chelmsley Wood from 11am till 3pm.

The day will be packed with entertainment and activities that show what Solihull’s older residents are interested in.  They include an arts and craft demonstration from a Shirley tenants’ group, a demonstration of the martial art tai chi, jewellery making and music from local group Steve and Chris.

The day is also about bringing people of all ages together, and students from the Grace Academy will perform a play.

There will be information on services older people may find useful and may help them stay independent for longer such as the Safe and Sound service.  The Pension Service, North Birmingham Community Credit Union and Age Concern will also be there.

SCH’s board member and Older Persons’ Champion Susan Gomm will cut the celebration cake.

Joan Morris, an 87-year-old resident, will be reading a selection of short stories that she writes during the day.  She uses the Safe and Sound service to help her keep her independence and doesn’t see age or her mobility problems as any barrier to enjoying herself and getting the most out of life.

She said: ‘I feel I can enjoy my life because I have prepared myself and will not give up as long as I have my faculties.  I wish more people would get themselves ready for old age as I have done and reap the benefit of independence.’

UK Older People’s Day aims to tackle outdated stereotypes on ageing and bring people of all ages together to celebrate the contribution older people make to society.

Residents in the borough of all ages are invited.  For more information please phone Joan Broome on 0121 717 1663.
