Solihull Celebrates Black History Month

From Press Office on 24 September 2008

Black History Month comes to Solihull once again this October, and to celebrate the borough’s diverse community, the Council will be hosting a range of events.

The month long event is celebrated every year across the borough to highlight the achievements and history of African, African Caribbean and Asian communities.

The Council has organised a host of activities to get people of all ages involved in Black History Month.

On the 14th October SKIN, by ACE dance and music, will be filling Solihull Arts Complex exploring a range of diverse topics such as ‘what makes people function’ and ‘we look different, but aren’t we all the same?’

Children under five can get involved in the celebrations at Chelmsley Wood Library when Rocky Amoo visits to host a fun music workshop on the 28th. Youngsters will be able to take part in African drumming and discover traditional African instruments like the Djembe.

A Young People’s Cultural Awareness Day taking place on the 29th will be open to 13-19 year olds. There will be Caribbean food, dance, fashion, and much more to get youngsters involved in celebrating different cultures.

Places on these events are limited so booking is essential, to find out how to book and for a full list of events people can visit www.solihull.gov.uk or pick up a leaflet from any Solihull Library, Sports Centre or Connect Centre.
