New planning rules come into place this week

From Press Office on 30 September 2008

People applying to Solihull Council for planning permission could save time and money when new regulations come into force this week.

From the 1st October many homeowners in the borough will find it easier to build on their property, as new legislation rules out the need for planning permission on many- but not all, household developments

Up until now, people needed to apply and pay a fee to the Council for planning permission before embarking on popular household projects such as building extensions, converting lofts and re-surfacing gardens.

The new rules mean that providing people meet a new set of limits and conditions, planning permission will not be needed, saving them up to £1000 in cost.

The new legislation is part of The Town and Country Planning Order 2008 and aims to strike a balance between freeing homeowners to make improvements to their houses and ensuring that neighbours are protected - large and more intrusive developments will still need permission.

People can learn more about the new legislation by visiting www.planningportal.gov.uk

Anyone planning to build on their property is advised to contact the Council to find out whether they need permission to do so. People can find out more about applying for planning permission by visiting www.solihull.gov.uk or by calling the Council on 0121 704 6000.
