Be safe, not sorry
From Councillor Mrs Diana Holl-Allen on 04 November 2009
Safer Solihull is asking people to make sure bonfire night goes with a bang and not a burn.
Fire, police and council officers have joined forces for a multi-agency campaign to clampdown on anti-social behaviour during the run-up to Bonfire Night.
Trading Standards will be visiting retailers to make sure fireworks are being stored safely and are being sold legally and not to persons under 18; Solihull Council will remove illegal bonfires and police will be taking a zero tolerance against those caught misusing fireworks.
Councillor Mrs Diana Holl-Allen, Cabinet Member for Safer Communities, said: “The thoughtless actions of some people during this time have an impact on the quality of life in our communities. Anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated or excused and we will use all the tools available to us to ensure people feel safe.”
People are also being urged to follow simple instructions when using fireworks to cut the number of injuries on November 5.
Solihull’s Fire Service Operations Commander Alan Pellowe said: “Firefighters have seen the damage fireworks and bonfires can do, both to lives and property. Don’t be complacent about firework safety and you and your family will have an enjoyable time.”
• Keep fireworks in a closed metal box and take them out one at a time
• Follow the manufacturers' instructions on each firework. Read them by torchlight - NEVER by naked flame
• Light fireworks at arm's length using a safety firework lighter or fuse wick
• Stand back after lighting
• NEVER go back to a firework once lit - it may go off in your face
• Keep pets indoors
• NEVER use flammable liquids - paraffin or petrol - to light the fire
• Keep everyone away from the fire - especially children, who must be supervised at all times
Residents should report any concerns about safety of fireworks in shops or underage sales to Trading Standards on 0121 704 8000.
Complaints about firework misuse in public places should be reported to the police on 0845 113 5000.
