Could you adopt a child in need?
From Cllr Ken Meeson, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People on 09 November 2009
Solihull Council is holding an adoption information evening to encourage more people to come forward and adopt a child, in support of National Adoption Week on November 9-15.
The information evening takes place on Thursday 26 November between 7-8.30pm at the Civic Suite, located at the rear of Solihull Council House, off Churchill Road in Solihull. Anyone who is interested in learning more about adoption is invited to come along to the event.
Adoption is open to a wide range of people from different backgrounds and cultures. Applicants can be married, in a permanent relationship or single, be a home owner or live in rented accommodation.
Adoptive parents Claire and Mark said: “Adoption has been one of the most rewarding and challenging things that we have done. We have got so much out of adopting Michael and Jake and know that we are making a real and positive difference to their lives.”
Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, Councillor Ken Meeson said: “It is sad that some children are unable to remain within their birth family, because of neglect, abuse or because their parents are unable to cope. Adoption is one of the best ways of giving these children a new family for life. We have children of all ages and with lots of different early life experiences who need adopting. It is crucial that we find loving and permanent families for them.
“Initially, we are simply asking people to come forward and find out more about adoption. If you are interested please come to the information evening and talk to one our dedicated members of staff.”
Solihull Council prides itself on providing a very personal service to applicants. The majority of approved adopters have a child placed with them within 12 months. Social workers are on hand to support both the child and the adoptive family through the adoption process and assistance continues to be available for years after.
