New library opening in Chelmsley Wood

From Cabinet Member for Community Services, Councillor Mrs Kate Wild on 10 November 2009

Chelmsley Wood Library is set to close its doors for the last time later this month ready for a brand new library to open in the town centre.

The current library on Stephenson Drive is closing on Saturday 28 November so that books and other items can be packed up and moved into the new building.

The new library, next to Asda, opens on Monday 14 December and will feature:
- Self-service kiosks where people will be able to take out, renew and return their own items
- Learndirect learning centre
- Free computer facilities
- CDs, DVDs, Talking Books
- Sight Loss and Deafness Information and Advice centre
- Homework Club
- Lots of events and activities for all ages

Following a recent survey of library users, the opening hours for the new library will also be extended. The opening hours will be:

9.30am - 7pm Monday and Thursday
9.30am - 5pm Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday

The opening of the library will mark a milestone in a major Council project to redevelop the town centre. The Council has been working with the owners Fordgate and other partners including Advantage West Midlands on the project, which has already seen an Asda supermarket open, as well as a new bus interchange to make travelling in and out of the town centre easier and improvements made to the existing shopping malls.

In the New Year, the Council will also be opening a new registration service and a Solihull Connect walk-in where residents can get help with their Council related queries such as blue badges, Council Tax and housing benefit.

Cabinet Member for Community Services, Councillor Mrs Kate Wild said: “This is an exciting time for Chelmsley Wood. The new library building will be at the heart of the community and combined with the new Solihull Connect walk-in, will bring Council services right to where our customers need them. I look forward to seeing the new library open.”

Local people are being invited to take a break from the Christmas shopping on Saturday 19 December and visit the new library where there will be free coffee and mince pies and a range of activities to try out between 10am and 3pm.  Everyone is welcome, and it’s all free.
