Aspiring students get tips from local entrepreneurs

From Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Regeneration, Councillor Ian Courts on 08 February 2010

Local business entrepreneurs paid a visit to Solihull College recently to provide advice to students on self-employment.  The event was organised in partnership with Solihull Council as part of the College’s Enterprise Week activities, 25-29 January.

Jon Upton and Roger Browne, two local self-employed IT businessmen, discussed with business and IT A-Level students the advantages and disadvantages of self-employment, how to get started and succeed in the long-term.

Jon Upton from THINK! and Do said: “It is extremely important to encourage students to aim high and think big when setting up in business.  I hope that through meeting someone who has gone out and created their own successful business, these students realise that anything is possible.”

Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Regeneration, Councillor Ian Courts said: “It is great to provide help and support to students who want to make their way in business. Encouraging the next generation of enterprising people is more important and urgent than ever and we need to ensure they have the confidence, ambition and skills to succeed.”

Charlotte Hoey Careers Co-ordinator at Solihull College said: “It is important that our students get the opportunity to engage with local businesses and get a first hand understanding of the way businesses network and forge successful relationships. It is also hugely encouraging to see the willingness of local businesses to become involved in a community event such as this.”
