Free family event to celebrate improved play areas

From Leader of the Council and Cabinet Member for Education, Children and Young People, Councillor Ken Meeson on 09 February 2010

Families in Solihull are being invited to a special event dedicated to playing outdoors to help celebrate the redevelopment of ten play areas in the borough.

Solihull Council has been awarded over £1m from the Government’s national Playbuilder scheme to improve 25 local playgrounds.

Nine play areas were completed by summer last year. Now the Council has completed a further 10 and is inviting families to come along to one of them to see the improvements for themselves.

The free event takes place on Wednesday 17 February from 12pm-3pm in Olton Jubilee Park. Activities on offer include penalty shoot out, climbing wall, face painting, balloon modelling, archery and a radar speed cage that measures the speed of a football when it’s kicked.

The park itself has new play equipment, a new BMX track and the run down basketball court has been transformed into a multi-use games area with goals and nets.

Leader of the Council and Cabinet Member for Education, Children and Young People, Councillor Ken Meeson said: “We want to provide good quality places for children to play outdoors to help keep them happy and healthy. Nineteen play areas in the borough have now been improved and I hope families will enjoy using these new facilities.”
