The Environmental Champions are back with a bang
From Press office on 10 February 2010
Solihull Council’s Environmental Champions got their long list of projects for 2010 off to a flying start with two successful outings last week.
On Wednesday a team of volunteers from Smith’s Wood Sports College, some new volunteers from BAM, a new Smith’s Wood resident and Champions from Knowle and Castle Bromwich cleared 25 bags of litter between them in Smith’s Wood.
These bags included a variety of fly-tipped items ranging from a scooter, metal clothes hangers and even a rubber duck. Also, with the help of park rangers and the local neighbourhood co-ordinator the main pathway through the wood was coppiced. The local nature reserve signs were painted by the BAM volunteers to make the site more welcoming.
The following day, a team from the Community Garden Service, together with the local Neighbourhood Co-ordinators replanted a shrub bed in front of the shops in Hob’s Moat to freshen up the appearance of the area.
The Community Garden Service team not only gave their time for free, but also provided all of the bark to finish off the project at no charge. Plenty of residents and shopkeepers came out to thank the Champions during the day for their hard work.
