A fantastic opportunity to have your voice heard

From Councillor Ken Meeson, Council Leader and Cabinet Member for Children and Young People on 15 February 2010

The hunt is on for young Silhillians who want to have a say in how to spend £130,000 of Government money specifically set aside for young people.

The Youth Opportunity Fund is an annual sum set aside for projects involving young people and Solihull Council is looking for a new panel to decide which projects should benefit from it.

This is the chance for 13-19 year-olds to be actively involved in both the decision-making and evaluation process involved with funding local youth projects.

The Youth Opportunity Fund can be used for a variety of projects for young people including sport, music and travel.  For example, one of the projects that benefitted from last year’s fund included a cultural awareness day organised by and for young people in Solihull raising awareness and providing workshops on a range of different cultures.

Also, the local charity SOLO (Solihull Life Opportunities), which enables young people with learning difficulties to enjoy social and leisure activities, received Youth Opportunity Fund grants for various events in 2009, including a camping trip.

Councillor Ken Meeson, Leader of the Council and Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: “Being involved in deciding how this money should be spent is an important and exciting role, and one that would be ideal for any young people who want to make a positive difference to Solihull.

For more information about how to get involved, there is an open event on Monday 22 February from 6-8pm at Solihull Youth Workshops on Lode Lane.  For further details, contact Nicki Gilbert on 0121 704 6314.
