Young candidates have election fever
From Press office on 15 February 2010
Elections are looming in Solihull, but the local candidates currently vying for votes are somewhat younger than you may expect.
That is because the votes are currently being cast in the elections to the UK Youth Parliament (UKYP) and nine Solihull candidates are standing for the chance to make a positive contribution to their community and potentially set them on their way to becoming one of the politicians of the future.
Candidates for the UKYP are aged between 11 and 18 years old and hold their post for one year. Once votes in Solihull are counted, there will be two new members of youth parliament (MYPs) and two new deputies (DMYPs).
Young people aged between 11 and 19 have been voting for their preferred candidates at youth centres and schools across the borough and the results will be announced on Tuesday 2 March as part of a special event hosted by Solihull Council.
The event will take place from 7 – 8.30pm at Solihull Youth Workshops on Lode Lane and will feature presentations covering what the youth parliament is about and what concerns they’ll be working to address, as well as giving the all-important election results.
