Clean dishes mean less carbon
From Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Regeneration, Councillor Ian Courts on 16 February 2010
More than 30 schools in Solihull will be saving 180 tonnes of carbon every year after securing funding to help them do the washing up!
Solihull Council has received an interest free loan through Salix Finance, a government funded company that helps public sector organisations reduce CO2 emissions, which will help it buy dishwashers for 34 primary schools to replace the existing sterilising sinks.
The sinks are up to 30 years old and use a large amount of energy by keeping a sink full of water heated for several hours a day. The dishwashers that they are being replaced with conform to Defra’s ‘green tick’ standards for efficiency, which will not only help Solihull to reduce its carbon footprint but will also save the schools hundreds of pounds every year in reduced energy and water bills.
Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Regeneration, Councillor Ian Courts said: “It’s great that so many schools are getting involved in this project. The dishwashers will give schools the chance to do their bit to help Solihull reduce its carbon footprint as well as save money and raise awareness with young people about energy and the environment.”
