Residents help build woodland

From Mayor of Solihull, Councillor Norman Davies on 10 March 2010

Thirty volunteers descended on Langley Hall Park this Sunday, 7 March, to help extend the existing woodland in the park.

Over 30 people, from pre-school children to pensioners, came along to the event, planting over 100 trees and shrubs over the day.

The park’s existing woodland provides a good environment for wildlife and contains many wildflower species and a number of old oak and alder trees.  The new trees compliment this mature woodland and provide new habitats to encourage birds and butterflies to the wood.

The Mayor of Solihull, Councillor Norman Davies, attended the event and planted the first tree of the day. He said: “It is great to see residents come together to help enhance their park.  Our parks not only provide a great space to walk, talk and play in, but also a valuable area for local wildlife.  By extending the wood we hope to attract more birds, insects and mammals to the wood.”

One of the volunteers, Ken Davidson said: "Helping to plant trees in Langley Hall Park has been a rewarding and enjoyable experience.   We had a healthy turn out of volunteers from all age groups.  I hope that support for Langley Hall Park continues and more people are encouraged to use and enjoy the park.”
