Changes to grass cutting service
From Cllr Ted Richards, Cabinet Member for Transport and Highways on 15 March 2010
Residents across the borough are being made aware of changes to the grass cutting service.
Starting from Monday 22 March, grass will still be regularly cut, however the cuttings will no longer be collected. The change is to be piloted for a year, and will save £160,000.
The move comes as part of savings agreed by Councillors in this year’s budget. The Council has to make £12m savings this year, most of which revolve around changes to the way the Council works “behind the scenes”.
However the grass cutting service is one of a small number of visible services where savings will be made.
Cabinet Member for Transport and Highways, Cllr Ted Richards, said: “This year we have made strenuous efforts to keep Council Tax low at 2.25% - 50p increase for Band D properties. This, combined with the need to make £12m savings and protecting our most vital front line services, means that difficult decisions have had to be made. We have said that we will trial this, as not collecting grass cuttings will make vital savings and will bring us in line with our neighbouring authorities who also do not collect the cuttings.”
