Celebrating biodiversity in Solihull
From Councillor Ken Meeson, Leader of the Council and Cabinet Member for Children and Young People on 18 March 2010
Solihull Council has found the perfect way to celebrate the International Year of Biodiversity – by signing up as an official partner.
By signing up to the yearlong celebrating of biodiversity, the Council has committed to promote the importance of it to residents.
It will also provide the ideal backdrop on which to launch new Woodland and Nature Conservation Strategies later in the year that will protect and enhance the Borough’s biodiversity.
Biodiversity is essentially the variety of natural species – e.g. all species of plants, animals and the complex ecosystems in which they live – and it is important to have a good amount of biodiversity in the borough for a number of reasons, from plants still being able to pollinate to still having the outdoors as a living educational resource.
Throughout this year of celebration there will be a number of events taking place in the borough with a biodiversity theme – these will include the designation of three new local nature reserves, the silver jubilee celebration of the Kingfisher Country Park, a biodiversity-themed Environmental Champions garden at the Gardener’s World live show at the NEC and the launch of Britain in Bloom with biodiversity as a central theme.
Councillor Ken Meeson, Leader of the Council, said: “It gives me great pleasure to say that Solihull Council has signed up as an official partner of the International Year of Biodiversity. The Borough already has a wonderful variety of wildlife within it and hopefully the work we do this year will help look after it for many more years to come.”
