Sports galore this summer
From Cabinet member for Community Services, Councillor Graham Craig on 20 July 2010
Help is on hand to avoid summer holiday boredom thanks to a fun-filled month of free sports in Meriden Park.
Solihull Council and Solihull Police have teamed up to offer twice daily sports sessions on weekdays between Monday 26 July and Friday 27 August, open to any young people aged 8-14 years old.
Each session will include a range of sports, including football, cricket, dodge ball, athletics, tag rugby and rounders. Participants don’t have to have played the sports before as there will be qualified coaches on hand to help with skills and rules.
The daily sessions run between 10am and noon and 1pm -3pm.
Children must be registered by their parent or carer before attending the sessions. A special registration morning is being held on Monday 26 July, 10am-12pm, at North Solihull Sports Centre. People can also call the Neighbourhood Sports Team on 0121 704 8274 to get a form sent to them.
Once registered, the child can attend as many sessions that they want to.
Cabinet member for Community Services, Councillor Graham Craig said: “The summer holidays are a great opportunity for children to participate in sports. These sessions are a fantastic way children can get some exercise, have fun and make new friends, plus it is all completely free.”
Sergeant Mark Cowl, who leads the Chelmsley Wood neighbourhood police team, said: “We are always keen to interact with youngsters from the local community and these sports sessions are an ideal opportunity for us to do so. We hope that providing extra-curricular activities for children during the school holidays will allow them to develop their sports skills and at the same time deter them from carrying out anti-social behaviour.”
