Celebrating Solihull’s sports stars

From Press Office on 21 July 2010

Solihull’s sporting stars have been celebrating after the presentation of the annual Solihull sports awards.

Three different sets of awards were presented during the ceremony - the Solihull School Sport Partnership Awards, Solihull Talented Athletes Recognition Scheme (STARS) and Solihull Sports Council Awards – which took place at the Arts Complex on Thursday 8 July.

The Solihull School Sport Partnership Awards recognised the top stars from the borough’s primary and secondary schools, including the best sportsperson, school team and junior volunteer.

The Solihull Sports Council Awards celebrated the borough’s top sportsman, sportswoman, team and coach, as well as the winner of the services to sport award. Among the winners from this section were Jonathan Eley and Ton Iveson, Solihull’s two Olympic speed skaters who represented Great Britain at this year’s Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

The STARS scheme rewards the borough’s best sportspeople by allowing them free access to training facilities to improve their skills, and during the evening the STARS for the next 12 months were announced.

Overall 18 STARS were announced from a variety of different sports from ice hockey to triathlon and ultimate frisbee to sprint hurdles.

John Maddox won STARS status for his skill in ultimate frisbee and he is competing for Great Britain under 23s in the world championships in Italy this month. Fellow STAR Alannah Paige Griffin played tennis for Great Britain and also won one of the biggest titles in her career. Alexander Teagle was another standout from the group of STARS for triathlon and has just been selected to represent Great Britain in Budapest for the ITU World Championships.

The awards were presented by Councillor Norman Davies, Deputy Mayor of Solihull, who said: “It is brilliant to see how much sport is going on in Solihull and the level to which some of our young people are performing. A big well done to all of the award winners.”
