Raising a glass to Solihull’s best bars

From Safer Solihull Partnership on 27 July 2010

Solihull’s licensed bars and restaurants have celebrated the second Solihull Best Bar None Awards.

The awards, organised by the Safer Solihull Partnership, aim to recognise Solihull’s licensed premises who strive to reduce alcohol related crime and promote responsible drinking.

The initiative is voluntary and involves an inspection carried out at each premises by trained assessors from Solihull Council, Solihull Police and West Midlands Fire Service.  Venues are assessed on how well they manage a range of issues including prevention of crime and disorder, drinks promotions, door policy, noise and underage drinking.

The premises reaching the required standard are awarded an accreditation in recognition of their achievement. They are also put forward to take part in the annual Best Bar None Awards.

A panel of judges, consisting of representatives from Solihull Police, Community Safety Partnership, British Institute of Innkeepers and West Midlands Fire Service, chose the below winners for this year from 29 licensed premises:

o Best Hotel Bar - Hilton Birmingham Metropole
o Best Suburban Traditional Venue - Woodman's Rest
o Best Town Centre Pub - White Swan
o Best Suburban Food-Led Venue - Heron's Nest
o Best Town Centre Bar - Slug & Lettuce
o Overall Best Bar None - White Swan

Over 350 people attended this year’s awards ceremony at the National Motorcycle Museum on Wednesday 14 July, including The Mayor of Solihull, Councillor Ian Courts, Leader of the Council, Councillor Ian Hedley and others from the Safer Solihull Partnership. The evening was hosted by Phil Upton from BBC WM.

The Mayor of Solihull, Councillor Ian Courts said: “I would like to congratulate all the winners.  These awards are a great way to recognise the efforts of bars and clubs which are working hard with the Partnership to make the borough a safe place to enjoy a night out.”

The night also raised £1262 through a raffle and auction which has been given to local charity SoLO (Solihull Life Opportunities).
