New Neighbourhood Sports Programme is a Knockout
From The Mayor of Solihull, Councillor Ian Courts on 28 July 2010
Former British and WBU World Middleweight Champion, Wayne Elcock, showed off his punch and jab at the launch of Solihull Council’s new Neighbourhood Sports Programme.
The Mayor of Solihull, Councillor Ian Courts joined Birmingham-born Elcock for the morning of activity at North Solihull Sports Centre on Monday 26 July.
The new programme is a mixture of free open sessions which all young people are welcome to attend. In addition there are sessions for young people who have offended or are at risk of becoming involved in crime and anti-social behaviour.
The Neighbourhood Sports Programme merges the Positive Futures and Fusion projects which have been helping Solihull’s Young People since 2002 and 2006 respectively.
Supported by national charity Street Games and through close working with Solihull Police, the programme aims to engage young people across the borough in sports and encourage confidence, self-belief, ambition and an active lifestyle.
Alongside watching boxing demonstrations from Wayne Elcock, visitors to the sports centre on Monday were given the chance to join in football, dodge ball and athletics sessions and sign up for summer activities.
The Mayor of Solihull, Councillor Ian Courts said: “It has been a pleasure to be here and see some of the great activities that are put on for Solihull’s young people. These sessions provide young people with something fun to do in their free time as well as encouraging a team spirit and confidence. I am really worried, however, to see how much the Mayoress enjoyed taking part in the boxing training!”
The Neighbourhood Sports Programme runs free sports session throughout the year for young people. For more information about the times and locations of sessions near you please contact 0121 704 8207.
