Council takes action on parkers putting children's lives at risk
From Cllr David Jamieson, Cabinet Member for Transport and Highways on 28 July 2010
Drivers in Solihull who park outside the school gates will soon be facing a £70 penalty, when Solihull Council introduces new parking regulations which will help keep children safe when they arrive and leave school.
This follows concerns from schools and parents.
Daily, children across the borough face the dangerous problem of people parking on the yellow “Keep Clear” zig zag markings outside the schools. But from September, new regulations will mean that it will be illegal to park on the markings, and those who do so will face being issued with a penalty notice of £70.
Councillor David Jamieson, Cabinet Member for Transport and Highways, said: “Children’s lives are being put at risk on a daily basis by people who park selfishly outside schools. We have listened to governors, headteachers and parents who want this to stop. From the new school term in September, anyone parking on the yellow zig zags outside a school will be liable for a penalty. This is purely and simply about keeping children safe, and potentially saving lives. ”
Signs will be placed around schools detailing the hours of the parking restrictions, which will affect around 85 schools across the borough.
