Communications award joy for Solihull Council
From Councillor David Jamieson, Cabinet Member for Transport and Highways on 09 August 2010
Solihull Council is celebrating after their Neighbourhood Co-ordinators won the 2010 Good Communications Award for Innovation.
In January 2009, the Council’s Neighbourhood Co-ordinators were issued with a Personal Data Assistant (PDA) - a handheld computer about the size of a mobile phone.
The PDAs can send and receive emails and acts as a camera and a phone, meaning the Co-ordinators can instantly report – with photographs - any defects to the borough’s roads or footpaths to the appropriate team, who can then start the repair process.
They also help neighbourhood co-ordinators respond quickly to any reports from residents.
The award judges picked out Solihull as having the most innovative approach to efficient remote working, from a host of other local authorities and central government departments.
The team from Solihull were presented with the award by BBC newsreader Nicholas Owen at a ceremony at the Emirates Stadium – the home of Arsenal football club.
Councillor David Jamieson, Cabinet Member for Transport and Highways, said: “This award is recognition of how Solihull Council is leading the way in mobile working and using the PDAs really does make a difference in how quickly we can start any repair work that is needed in the borough. Well done to everyone involved."
