Bloom judges come to town
From Councillor Tim Hodgson, Cabinet Member for the Environment on 10 August 2010
Judging for this year’s Britain in Bloom competition took place on Friday 6 August - the culmination of 4 months of planting and preparations.
Solihull is hoping the months of hard work are enough to win this year’s Britain in Bloom Best City, having been a National winner in the city category in 2008 and a gold award winner in the regional Heart of England city category last year.
Royal Horticultural Society judges were today taken on a 40 mile tour to showcase the borough’s beautiful displays. The tour stopped at many places including the Town Centre and Malvern Park, where judges were able to see the new carpet bed which commemorates the 100th anniversary of Girl Guiding.
The judges also had the opportunity to meet local residents at locations such as Widney Manor Station where the Soroptimists Society who have worked tirelessly to keep the station looking attractive.
Solihull’s Environment Champions, who have worked on a range of projects across the borough, from small litter-picks to major park clean-ups, also met the judges today as they toured the borough.
Solihull in Bloom was launched in March with a big town centre event and has included a garden competition, school art competitions and new Community Mosaic Garden in Mell Square.
Cabinet Member for Environment, Cllr Tim Hodgson is hopeful all the hard work put in since March will pay off, he said: “Thank you to everyone who has contributed to our beautiful Bloom displays. I look forward to hearing the results in due course.”
