Big, local and app-solutely fabulous!
From The Mayor of Solihull, Councillor Ian Courts on 23 May 2011
Solihull residents can now get council and local news on the move thanks to a new smartphone app for the borough.
The Big Local App Solihull, developed by AppHouse UK, is now available for iPhone and iPod touch users.
The free app contains a host of council information, including latest news, details on waste and recycling, information about local councillors and more.
As well as featuring Solihull Council, the app also has local news feeds, listings for Cineworld and the Arts Complex, tourist information and a feed from Solihull College.
The app also encompasses a local business directory, featuring details of more than 1000 local businesses.
The new app was launched by the outgoing Mayor of Solihull, Councillor Ian Courts – himself an avid iPhone user.
Councillor Courts said: “The Council is always looking for new ways of making information available to residents, and this free app is ideal as it gives you the chance to have information about both the Council and the wider borough in your pocket.”
The app is available now for download from the iTunes store and will also be available for Android users soon. The Solihull app follows in the footsteps of a Redditch and Bromsgrove version, while further apps for other regions across the country are also planned.
For those without a smartphone, you can still access the information from the app online at: http://www.biglocalapp.co.uk/directory-solihull.
For any local businesses who wish to upgrade their listing to feature more prominently on the app, please contact AppHouse UK on 0800 567 7342.
Notes to editors
Solihull Council has not paid to be featured in this app – it has worked together with AppHouse UK to finalise the content and layout for the Council’s section of the overall app.
