A pioneering new children's chorus for Solihull

From Councillor Joe Tildesley, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People on 23 June 2011

Solihull Music Service is proud to announce the launch of their new Children’s Chorus, one of the first local authority led programmes in the UK.

Year 3 children, who just love to sing, have been recruited from across the borough and will be raising the rooftops from September onwards.

Under the leadership of Val Whitlock, Solihull Children's Chorus Director, 90 enthusiastic children will be coached and trained in a wide range of techniques to enable them to achieve the highest standard of choral artistry, all taught in a fun and lively way.

Councillor Joe Tildesley, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: “Val Whitlock is well known nationally for her infectious enthusiasm, energy and ability to develop singing with young people.

“This new venture provides an exciting opportunity for the young people of Solihull to experience the many benefits of choral singing that include improved development in self-confidence, enhanced memory skills and better interaction in group activities.”

This year’s recruits will be fine tuning their skills in preparation for performances throughout this year and next at venues such as Birmingham Town Hall, Solihull Arts Complex and Warwick Art Centre. As the choir continues to develop, it is hoped that further performances will take place including choral competitions such as BBC Radio 3 Choir of the Year.

Councillor Tildesley, added: “I am delighted that we are able to offer such a wonderful programme of music for young people here in Solihull. I will look forward to hearing the new children’s choir perform their productions and wish them every success in their training and rehearsals.”
