Road Safety Week a success
From Councillor Ted Richards, Cabinet Member for Transport and Highways on 07 July 2011
Road Safety week was a resounding success at Forest Oak Special school.
The school spent the week - beginning June 20, focusing on pedestrian safety, cycling training and classroom based activities. Pupils also enjoyed activities provided by visitors from the school crossing patrols, Fire Service, St John Ambulance, DHL truck drivers and the Police.
The children enjoyed sessions such as climbing aboard the fire engine and dressing up as school crossing patrols. They also discussed the dangers on the roads and how to stay safe.
Councillor Ted Richards, Cabinet Member for Transport and Highways said: “This Road Safety week is a great way of engaging young people and teaching them about the dangers they may face as pedestrians. There are many hazards that can prove to be very challenging so anything that equips our young people with the skills needed to navigate our roads should be commended. The staff and participants should all be congratulated for their efforts to raise awareness of this issue.”
The Road Safety week was organised jointly by Solihull Council’s Road Safety and Sustainable Transport Team and Forest Oak School. Some pupils from neighbouring Merstone School also took part in practical and classroom lessons in pedestrian and cycling training.
The week ended with a celebration assembly attended by all of the visitors who had helped out during the week and also special VIP guests including Councillor Ted Richards, Cabinet Member for transport and Highways and ward councillor for Smith's Wood, Alison Walters.
During the assembly everyone watched road safety animation films that had been created during the week by senior pupils.
